Every middle school or high school student who has had braces knows one thing: you smile with your mouth closed. Traditional braces are typically seen on middle school students who don’t always enjoy the experience, and a few “lucky” ones have the added pleasure of using headgear as well.
However, after the braces are taken off no one regrets having them. Why? Because the many benefits of having straight teeth far outweigh the temporary discomfort of having braces. Fortunately, the field of orthodontics has progressed dramatically, which makes getting straight teeth easier than ever! These new options, such as Fastbraces® and Invisalign®, can give you straight teeth without the prolonged discomfort of traditional braces.
These benefits range from improving gum health and allowing for better brushing to clear speech and a boost in self-esteem; straight teeth can even make eating easier and protect the teeth from accidents.
The What, Why and How of Orthodontics
What: Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that diagnoses and treats irregularities of the teeth and jaw. The most common irregularity treated is called a malocclusion which is an incorrect relationship between the maxilla (upper arch) and the mandible (lower arch), or a general misalignment of the teeth.
Why: There are both health and aesthetic reasons to straighten your teeth. With straighter teeth you can avoid periodontitis which is a gum disease that develops from bacterial infection; straight teeth can be more effectively cleaned of debris, plaque, and bacteria build up. Additional health problems that crooked teeth can cause are a temporomandibular disorder (TMJ) causes a headache, jaw pain, and grinding of teeth and tooth injuries due to weaker, more vulnerable teeth.
How: There are three ways that orthodontics can address crooked teeth. The most traditional is the fixed orthodontic braces, but the other options, Fastbraces® and Invisalign® are even better! Fastbraces® address a number of tooth problems from crossbite to crowding. Best yet, as the name suggests, this method corrects problems quickly so that you have the straight teeth you desire all the faster. There is also Invisalign® which is a transparent and removable treatment. Both methods address the main concern people have about dental braces which are aesthetic. Especially for adults, the prospect of wearing unattractive metal braces for long periods of time can be very discouraging.
With all these options available orthodontics can help you have the healthy, straight, beautiful smile you’ve been waiting for!
